How To Select a Startup - To Join or For Investment
Join us for this unique opportunity to see an inside view on how venture investors evaluate a startup for investment. Watch selected startups present to investors. You'll get the opportunity to sit behind experts to watch and learn how each of them evaluates teams, business models, market size, risk, and more. Whether you are a founder, future angel investor, or thinking about joining a startup and not sure of the risk, this session will help you formulate your process for how to evaluate startup opportunities. These are skills that will help you throughout your career. The session is part of our inaugural StartUp Catalyst Competition where we bring together investors to give feedback to startups. The top selected startups will receive warm introductions to investors and advisors that can help them move to the next stage. Format: 5 startups will be selected to present for 6 minutes each (3 minute pitch, minute 3 Q/A); with 5 minutes for deliberation by the panel of judges and time to chat with the startups/panel).

Camila Noordeloos is currently the Sr. Manager of the Portfolio of Investments at GE Ventures, the Corporate Venture Capital arm of General Electric. In this role, she provides portfolio analysis and guidance, driving strategic oversight to the organization.
Prior to joining GE Ventures team in 2013, Camila held several finance roles at GE’s headquarters in Connecticut. She’s also a big supporter of GE’s Women’s Network affinity group and previously held leadership roles in its Bay Area steering committee.
Originally from Salvador, Brazil, she holds a Bachelors degree in business administration from the Universidade Federal da Bahia, and is a MBA candidate at the University of Pennsylvania - The Wharton School.
Tim focuses on mobile enterprise software and mobile consumer Internet. He has had three exits as an entrepreneur and over 18 years of experience advising and investing in 100+ early stage startups. In 2001, Tim founded Bridge, an enterprise software company focused on corporate training in Beijing, China, which he led to an 8-figure exit. Prior to Bridge, Tim led product at Quoteship, a B2B marketplace for logistics, which exited to Logistics.com (NASDAQ: ICGE). Tim began his career at WebYes, an industry pioneer ASP acquired by Breakaway Solutions (NASD: BWAY) in 1999. He also spent time at ExxonMobil as a developer, and at Mofo where he advised startups on IP and financing. Tim earned his BSE in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, where he received the Bristol-Myers Squibb award for his work in cancer research, and holds a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He is a member of the State Bar of California and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
Shayna Modarresi is General Partner at Lodestar Ventures, a seed and early stage venture fund. She also oversees deal flow for the Band of Angels and is an Advisory Board Member at Correlation Ventures. Previously, Shayna was a Venture Partner at XG Ventures where she helped back nearly 40 early stage companies, predominantly in the technology sector. Some of the 16 startups in XGs portfolio have been acquired, by the likes of Google, Twitter, Facebook, Box, and Groupon. Prior to XG, Shayna managed DLA Piper's Venture Group where she focused on making investment recommendations and enhancing the funding prospects of early and growth stage companies as well as actively managing portfolio companies. Prior to DLA, Shayna was with Probitas Partners and CMEA where she advised on and was responsible for raising more than $3B from institutional, venture, and strategic investors for ventures funds like Scale Venture Partners, Shasta Ventures, BCE Ventures, and IDG Ventures. While at Probitas, Shayna also advised on the firms secondary activities. Prior to joining Probitas Partners, Shayna spent approximately six years as an Investment Banker, advising numerous multinational and regional corporate clients on merger & acquisitions and private placement transactions. She started her career in Investment Banking at Lazard in New York. Shayna was named a Women of Influence in Venture Capital by the Silicon Valley Business Journal and is an advisor to Portugal Ventures Call for Entrepreneurship Program. Shayna attended the University of California at Berkeley and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She holds degrees in Molecular Cell Biology and Business.
Paul is an Associate at Transmedia Capital. Paul joined the firm in 2016 from SV Angel, a leading seed stage venture capital firm where he worked closely with eShares, Fictiv, Instawork and Theorem, among others. Previously, he worked at Goldman Sachs where he invested capital on behalf of a select group of families and institutions. Prior to Goldman Sachs, Paul worked for Seven Hills Partners, a boutique investment bank. During his time at Seven Hills he advised early stage technology companies on a broad range of strategic alternatives including mergers, acquisitions and capital raising. Paul is currently working towards his MBA at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and graduated with a BS in Finance from Santa Clara University.
Philipp is Co-Founder and General Partner at FYRFLY Venture Partners. Philipp is investor, operator, entrepreneur and consultant for more than 20 years in the U.S., Europe and Asia. He brings convergent technology, market and innovation experience across many core technology areas. Prior, Philipp was co-founder of Dropimpact, a digital innovation catalyst and investment firm, in Silicon Valley as well as co-Founder and CEO of Onor Inc., a native & immersive digital marketing platform. Prior, Philipp was a Senior Executive at Adchemy, a search technology start-up co-founded by Prof. Rajeev Motwani, an early advisor to Sergey Brin and Larry Page. He has been strategic advisor to many leading Fortune 500 and emerging companies in their global growth and innovation efforts. Philipp was a Founding and Managing Partner at Accenture Interactive (now Accenture Digital), now a Practice with more than 4,000 professionals in digital and quantitative marketing and design. Philipp was also part of Accenture Technology Venture Team, contributing to both the deal and operational aspects of venture value creation. Prior to Accenture, Philipp was at Interpublic (IPG) in Europe, one of the leading advertising, marketing and design firms globally. Prior to IPG Philipp was with Vontobel Asset Management, part of a leading Swiss Private Bank. Philipp is an active investor, board member, and advisor for start-ups such as Playspan (acquired by Visa), Appstores (acquired by InMobi), SourceDNA (acquired by Apple), Angellist, Philz Coffee, TraceUp, Beekeeper, Speakr, Doky, Marsec, data.world, Pubmatic and others.
Philipp holds an MBA from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, and a B.A. in Micro Economics, University of Applied Sciences, Zurich, Switzerland.
Angel Saad Gómez, Venture Partner, began with Oak in 2011 and became a Venture Partner in 2014. He currently focuses on Oak’s strategic opportunities in key emerging markets.
Angel has a wide range of industry experience in technology, energy, consumer internet, finance, logistics, communications, and consumer packaged goods. He works closely with several Oak portfolio companies including eSolar, NowThis, Airspan, Mimosa Networks, Limelight Networks (NSDQ: LLNW), FRS, and on an ad hoc basis with other portfolio companies. Angel has a finance and consulting background, having advised Fortune 500 and technology companies, and family offices.
A native of Mexico, he has served in several advisory capacities to the Mexican Government and with Mexico’s National Autonomous University (UNAM), a top international research institution, in their ecosystem development initiatives. Angel actively contributes to developing ecosystems in key emerging markets around the world. Angel holds a BA from Stanford University, where he rowed for Stanford’s Crew team.
Kayvon is a serial entrepreneur having co-founded two VC backed startups and is also a practicing patent and startup law attorney. Kayvon holds a BS in Bioengineering from UCSD, a JD (cum laude, intellectual property concentration) from the University of San Diego School of Law, and is a MBA candidate at the University of Pennsylvania - The Wharton School. As an active IP attorney, Kayvon has prosecuted hundreds of patents for Fortune 100s and startups across a wide range of industries including software, telecommunications, healthtech, and wearables. In addition to his legal insights, Kayvon has a wealth of fundraising and entrepreneurial experience, having previously co-founded 1) a software startup that raised ~$2.5M in seed funding, had over 20 employees, and was awarded an initial Facebook FBFund grant and 2) a medtech startup that raised ~$3.5M in grants and venture funding and garnered FDA clearance on a groundbreaking medical device product.
